The Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned sine die on Monday, August 4, following the death of former Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren. Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato made the announcement as legislators raised slogans of “Shibu Soren Amar Rahe” in the House. The session had begun on August 1 and was scheduled to continue for five days.
Shibu Soren, aged 81, passed away at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi earlier on Monday morning. He had been on life support for nearly a month after suffering a stroke one and a half months ago. He was undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments and was shifted from Ranchi to Delhi on June 19, 2025. His death marks the end of a long political career that spanned several decades.
Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato said in the Assembly, “Dishom Guru Shibu Soren left for heavenly abode today... His demise is not only an irreparable loss to Jharkhand but to the nation... He was known for his fight for the poor...” The Assembly was adjourned immediately after this, as a mark of respect. No further legislative business was taken up.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is also Shibu Soren’s son, announced the news on social media saying, “Today, I have become empty...” The Jharkhand government declared a three-day state mourning from August 4 to 6. During this period, all state government offices will remain closed, the national flag will fly at half-mast, and no official state functions will be organised.
Political leaders across India expressed condolences over the death. President Droupadi Murmu said Shibu Soren’s contribution to tribal identity and social justice would be remembered. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a grassroots leader dedicated to tribal and poor communities. The Rajya Sabha, where Soren was a sitting member, adjourned for the day, and both Houses of Parliament observed a minute of silence in his memory.
